We're finally here!

I am so excited that we finally made it to Hawaii. The last six months have been extremely busy both professionally and personally and I am so ready for a break.
Unknown-1

For those who have been following, you know the first time we tried to get here it didn't go so well, but that is all behind us now. As I look out from my balcony I have forgotten all about that. I am ready to soak in my seven days of ocean, sand, and air. While we really don't have much planned, I can't wait to explore Kauai. It is the only island I have not been to and I can't wait to see why it is called the "garden island". I will most definitly post a few pitures later in the week.

Before I show you the two adorable dresses Robin made I have to give you a little backstory...

Since my oldest was about 2 old we have gone to Hawaii every year.

Pool 2

That is until I had my youngest, and after we took her twice, 9 weeks and 13 months, we realized she was not as easy as the other two.

We have not traveled there, or anywhere else on an airplane, in almost 5 years. Before Sarah, we had been to all the islands except Kauai. I can't really pin point what it is, but I love it there. I love the quiet single lane highway of the Big Island, I loved seeing the volcano at dawn on Maui, I loved visiting friends and going to Pearl Harbor on Ouahu, and I loved the romantic surprise birthday trip to Lanai.

Everytime I go I feel relaxed and at peace. When we went the very first time, Sydney, the oldest, was around two years old. She was fascinated with the hula dancer that danced nightly in the hotel lounge area. She would ask to go every night and just sit there for over an hour watching her dance. Sydney was a very early talker, and when we returned from that first trip she started asking to learn how to dance the hula. We of course thought this was a passing phase and pretty much ignored her. The next year we went back and it was the same thing. Every night we had to watch the dancer. Sydney was just captivated by the music and her dancing. She was still asking to dance and now slept with Hawaiian music playing in her room. Finally, when she was almost 3, we realized this was not going to end and we started looking for Hula in Los Angeles. I figured this would be non existent and that would be the end of it. I was wrong. My husband found a hula school only 10 minutes from our house. I have to say I was pretty surprised. We both agreed it couldn't hurt to let her try it. While Sydney wouldn't dance at first, she loved to go and watch. She picked up the chanting immediately and would walk around the house singing and chanting. The Kumu hula, the head, Keali'i Ceballos, assured me it was fine that she didn't want to dance. As long as she wanted to come he said to bring her. He suggested she watch and that the few moms in the class, who had young children, should get up and dance. That the children would dance along side us after a while. He turned out to be right. Pretty soon she was dancing. What I didn't expect to happen was that I too would really enjoy it. I loved the music, learnig the stories, and the Ohana (family), I was dancing with. Sydney continued in the Keiki (children) class, and I moved to the adult class along with three other moms.

Sydney and I both danced for years. I even competed once in Florida. I only stopped dancing when I was 8 months pregnant with Sarah and was litterally falling over as I danced. Once I had a third child I just couldn't find the time to get back. I still hope to get back one day. Sydney stopped dancing when she was 10 years old. Her gymnastics was becoming increasingly demanding and she just couldn't do both any more. We still go every year to see their Hoike. This is a beautiful performance of hula and story telling that both Sydney & I both took part in for years. If you ever get a chance to see Hula Halau o Keali'i o Nalani dance make sure you do. They are just wonderful. All three of my kids still listen to Hawaiian music at night and I will always be grateful for the ohana I gained from hula. The culture is so warm, the stories run so deep, and the respect for their elder and community is amazing.

Okay, back to the fabric. When I saw the new batik coming in it made me think about my summer travels. I immediately thought Sarah would look so cute in a batik dress when we're in Hawaii. While I know batik didn't originate in Hawaii, seeing it reminds me of the islands. Though Batik may have originted in Indonesia, it is very prevalent in Hawaiian apparel and home decorating. It is used in sarongs, tops, and dresses, as well as for mens Hawaiian shirts. You will also see beautiful batik pillows and quilts in Hawaii, as well as on the main land. There are so many great choices it was hard to pick just a few.

If you're curious about the roots of Batik and how it is made you can read more about it here and here.

Here is the fabric and pattern Robin used.

Fabric Friday, August 8-9-13...

Fabric Friday

How is it Friday again? The weeks just fly by here. Every time I take a warehouse walk there is so much new fabric that it is amazing. Here are a few new products that we just got in. Just a reminder these fabrics are not online yet. They are the newest of the new. I have linked to where they will show up in a few days. We also update the new arrivals page every week. This a another great way to keep on top of all the new product that we're putting online.

We have had a few people ask us to put ribbing online. We love to hear your feedback. I went to our main warehouse, found some cotton ribbing,
as well as some rayon ribbing and here are a few. They will all be online next week.

I love this laminated cotton. It is right on trend with the chevron print and the bright colors.

This collection called Tailor Made, from Timeless Treasures, is a beautiful flannel and has a great hand. The textured prints really have dimension.
They look like a textured knit as opposed to a flannel print. Really cool!

Since we just blogged a great romper in a silk charmuese, I thought we would put a few more options online.
Some of these are silk charmuese and some are poly charmuese. We're always looking out for every shopper and their individual budgetary needs.

Here's a new basic from Riley Blake called Small Gingham.

The double-faced wool is just gorgeous! Perfect addition to your fall wardrobe.

This beautiful modern collection from Michael Miller is called Waterfront. It was designed by Violet Craft and is clean and fresh. I love the combination of the bridge,
the geometric, the cherry blossom tree, and the birds. They all compliment each other so well.

While I can't believe summer is coming to an end, we always have a few warm weeks in September & October. If you're still looking to make a swimsuit here are some beautiful,
made in Italy, solid swimwear. It is also great for activewear, yoga pants, dancewear, and cycling shorts. Make sure to take a look online. I love that we have both shiny & matte.

Here are a few beautiful textured home decorating fabrics from P. Kaufman. The two multi colored ones come backed. They are 80% viscose and 20% cotton. They are backed with 100% polyester.
They would make amazing pillows, dinning room chairs, and more.

You will be seeing some adorable pajama bottoms on our blog  from this fabric soon. We have so many new flannels, but who doesn't like Dr. Seuss?
This new collection, from Robert Kaufman, called Cat in the Hat 2, is really bright and perfect for either a boy or girl.

We just received a large batch of new cottons from Alexander Henry. I will be showing more on Facebook this week. They range from Christmas, to Folklorico, to skulls, to Pin Up's, and a few things in between.
They have some really great novelty prints! This one is called Sea Sirens.  It's a bit naughty, but also so nice. Love these mermaids!

Since the mermaids were for the guys, here is one for the ladies. Hurry Down the Chimney has 3 prints and they all feature the abs that Santa only wishes he had!

So that is it for this week. Since it was a really heavy cotton print week I will post more on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Have a great weekend!

Enjoy!

Proud sponsor of The Alphabet Collection...

The Alphabet Collection

 Image

Lowpricefabric.com is proud to be a sponsor of Pattern Anthology's newest patterns, The Alphabet Collection.  It is available for purchase for a limited time only!  Pattern Anthology is a collaboration of four pattern designers, Andrea, from Go to Patterns & The Train to Crazy,  Kate, from See Kate Sew, Melissa from Melly Sews, and Shauna from Shwin and Shwin.  A few months ago I was lucky enough to connect with Andrea and we hosted a group of bloggers for her event, Fabric Weekend 2013. You can read more about the day here.  Andrea connected me with Kate and before I knew it we were part of this amazing pattern collection. The tour started last week and it has been great watching each blogger do their own interpretation of the Alphabet collection. I love that it is unisex and still so fun and interesting.  It is just perfect for back to school. There are so many possibilities. By mixing and matching fabrics and textures you can create looks that go on for days and it looks like these bloggers did just that!

Our fabrics have been very popular with the Study Hall Jacket and the vest. Here are a few pictures.

This yellow wool really adds that wow factor. Great pop of color! Also the suiting for the vest is a cute play on mens apparel.

The Echino Bonnetbus is so cool! He looks ready to start learning!

This warm & cozy sherpa vest is perfect for Fall. It's almost like wearing your favorite blanket.

I love what Shwin & Shwin did with this orange boucle. The texture is great and that gold zipper just takes it over the edge into perfection.

Image

This vest from our Ikat is lovely. Just as Elsie says, it is just the right amount of grown up, yet still young at the same time. I love the racer back detail as well.

Image

And lastly, what girl doesn't want this jacket? This faux fur adds a look of sophistication that any pre-teen would love.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the outfits. Every morning I go to work and look to see the newest creation. It's a nice surprise. If you buy the pattern and make something with our fabrics please tag us or post it on our Facebook page. We love to see what you guys are making out there. Can you believe it is almost time for school to start?!? Enjoy the last few weeks of summer & get sewing!

Enjoy!

One pattern, two fabrics...

I feel like I have been talking about these rompers for a while.  Sorry it has taken us so long to post this blog.  We're in the process of making changes to the site, as well as adding shelving for our growing inventory. Both exciting changes, but time-consuming!  Without future ado, here are both the rompers....

Both rompers were made from McCall's M6083. The first romper Robin put together is made from a stretch denim. It has a casual look and is great for day. Since we used a dark denim, with a little bling, this could go from day to evening very easily. Here are a few pictures as it went together.

Here is the finished project. It ended up going right to the front mannequin. Perfect summer piece.

For the second romper we choose a beautiful silk zebra print. The champaign color of the background gives this
animal print a sophisticated feel. I absolutely love it! When I do get to Hawaii this will be great for a night out.

Here are a few pics as this one went together.

This is a great piece. It can be dressed up or down. I didn't have time to accessorize my model, but just the little gold belt and heels are a good start.

This could be made with any of our silks or printed charmuese.

While I really like the romper both ways, this pattern needed some adjusting. We made a size 8 and had to lengthen the top portion to fit my bodice and go up one size in the bottom for my hips. Just a bit of advice so you don't learn the hard way, like we did.  Always better to think about these sort of issues before you cut into your fabric. If you're built like I am you may want to make one size top and another size bottom.

Thanks for stopping by.

Enjoy!

The first fabric Friday...

I was supposed to be relaxing on the beach, with a drink in my hand, but instead, due to tropical storm Flossie, I'm back at my desk typing. I am disappointed to say the least, but work must go on.  We're hoping to reschedule, but so far we're not having an easy time of it. Anyway, today we want to show you some of the new products that just hit our warehouse and should be online by next week. I will show the link to where they will go when they are online. Remember it takes us about a week from warehouse to online. Thank for your patience, it will be worth it. The licensed cotton prints are perfect for children's decor, accessories, and apparel. The apparel fabrics have an amazing feel. I know they are going to sell quickly. When I was photographing them in the retail store people couldn't keep their hands off them. The new home decorating fabrics have are beautiful. The navy embroidered one is so classic. A few of the home decor fabrics are linen blends. I always love the look of linen blends. For me they read as relaxed, airy and timeless.
